Exposure therapy: ArtXpose brings erotic art to Sarasota

As owners of local advertising agency, Muddy Feet Media, Tim Cottrell and Matt Sheils are used to shaking things up a bit. They specialize in taking a client’s idea and bringing it to the next level. So, when the two men decided they wanted to host an art show to help get their name out, it seemed only natural to apply the same formula.

“Art isn’t just seashells and sunsets,” says Cottrell. “We wanted to create something we’ve never seen in Sarasota, and we wanted it to be something a little more provocative and interactive.”

This Saturday, Nov. 16, the men will host ArtXpose, an erotic art exhibit featuring seven local artists and eight models. The focus, they say, is on participation. Cottrell says he hopes that in addition to just observing, he hopes to see people joining in the fun, sketching or creating their own art.

“This town needs a kick,” he says. “The people here are hungry for something different. A lot of younger people feel like they have to leave to find something artistically compelling. Hopefully we can be a part of catering to that crowd.”

Cottrell and Sheils say that if the event is a success, they plan to expand their event planning to include philanthropic parties and art shows.

“We really just want to inspire young artists to stay and create their art here,” says Sheils. “This event will be a good start. I’m hoping people will get into it; the event is almost going to be defined by the people who attend.”

ArtXpose takes place at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, at HuB Sarasota. $20 for pre-order tickets. $30 at the door. Includes unlimited drinks.
