Pine View ranks among nation's best, again

Pine View is continuing its 'tradition of excellence.'

The Osprey school, which draws students from throughout Sarasota County, came in No. 17 in a Newsweek ranking of the country’s best high schools.

The rankings determined which high schools best prepared their graduates for college by comprising such metrics as graduation rate, college acceptance rate, standardized test scores, and the percentage of students enrolled in advanced college-preparatory courses.

In April Pine View was named the sixth-best high school in the country by U.S. News and World Report. During the 2003–2004 school year, Pine View was recognized with the Blue Ribbon School Award of Excellence by the United States Department of Education — the highest award an American school can receive.

Pine View, founded in 1969, has 2,210 students and 121 full-time teachers. The school is the only full-time program in Florida for intellectually gifted students in elementary through high school.

Prospective students are admitted based on gifted identification standards required by the Florida Department of Education, including an IQ of 130 or more and other reading and math performance requirements.

Students must maintain a minimum grade point average and complete advanced foreign language courses to graduate.
