+ Poker tournament to benefit River Dawgs
The 13U River Dawgs will hold a Texas Hold ’Em Poker Championship Dec. 7, at Tiki Joe’s Neighborhood Bar & Grill, 5802 Longwood Run Blvd., Sarasota.
Cost is $50 and includes poker and buffet, or $25 for just the buffet. Prizes will be awarded to the top-three finishers. Guests also will enjoy a silent auction.
Dinner and registration begin at 6 p.m., followed by poker at 7:30 p.m. Players must be 21 years old to participate.
All proceeds will benefit the 13U River Dawgs and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Sponsorship opportunities also are available.

+ Lakewood Ranch blanks Clearwater Catholic
The Lakewood Ranch High girls soccer team defeated Clearwater Central Catholic 2-0 Nov. 12.
Talia Falco scored a goal and had an assist. Hannah Miller scored a goal; and Lindsay Martinez recorded an assist. Alex Latham recorded her fifth shutout, as Lakewood improved to 4-0-1.
+ Mustangs draw even with Pirates
The Lakewood Ranch High boys soccer team tied Port Charlotte 1-1 Nov. 14.
Ryan Sollazzo scored the lone goal for the Mustangs.
Lakewood is now 2-2-1 and 2-0-1 in the district. The Mustangs will travel to rival Braden River Nov. 22.
+ Former LWR High swimmer named Freshman of the Week
Former Lakewood Ranch High swimmer Danielle Valley was named the SEC Female Freshman of the Week for her performance in Florida’s sweep of Alabama last week.
Valley excelled in the middle-distance events to earn her first SEC athlete of the week honor. Valley won the 500 freestyle in a career-best time of 4:49.25. She also finished second in the 200 freestyle in a new personal best time of 1:49.63.
+ ODA girls basketball team scores first win of the season
The Out-of-Door Academy girls basketball team defeated Sarasota Military Academy 37-20 Nov. 12.
Jenna Bloch led the way for the Lady Thunder with 17 points. Sierra VanSuch added 15 points.

+ Cardinal Mooney boys basketball
The Cardinal Mooney High boys basketball team defeated Manatee 74-63 in the preseason classic Nov. 12.
Ryan McMahon scored 22 points and recorded six assists to lead the way for the Cougars.
Justin Najmy had nine points and five steals. Nick Peacock had 12 points, and Tommy Rao added 10 points.
Cardinal Mooney followed up its win with a 48-38 victory over Braden River Nov. 14. McMahon and Rao each had 11 points. Najmy added eight points and six assists.
