+ Riverview Rams race to second-place finish
The Riverview High boys and girls cross-country teams both raced to second-place finishes at the Manasota Track Club Invitational Sept. 28 in Sarasota.
The boys scored 67 points to finish behind Timber Creek (28), while the girls scored 46 points to finish behind North Port (31).
Michaelie Grajalez finished fourth in 20 minutes, 36.50 seconds to lead the way for the Lady Rams. Chinami Wade was fifth in 20:49, followed by Robyn Natherson (ninth, 21:22), Jessica Lonas (10th, 21:23.30) and Rachael Cramer (18th, 22:26.50).
On the boys side, Blake Riley finished sixth in 17:10.20 followed by Bryce Vokus (ninth, 17:25.20), Warran Grajalez (10th, 17:27.10), Russell Natherson (19th, 18:09.70) and Matthew Berman (23rd, 18:27.30).
+ Sarasota Christian sweeps PCCC
The Sarasota Christian volleyball team defeated Port Charlotte Community Christian 25-13, 25-23, 25-18 Sept. 24.
Briana Eddy and Anikka Jensen each had six kills for the Lady Blazers. Andrea Witmer added five kills.
+ Cardinal Mooney suffers lopsided loss
The Cardinal Mooney football team suffered its first loss of the season after being shut out 43-0 by Tampa Catholic Sept. 27.
The Colts racked up 301 yards of total offense, while the Cougars were held to just 142 yards.
Quarterback Reese Vita completed 5-of-12 passes for 39 yards and an interception, which was returned for a touchdown in the second quarter. Demardre Patterson rushed for 61 yards on 20 carries.
Cardinal Mooney will be off next week in preparation for its non-district contest at St. Pete Catholic Oct. 11.
+ Orioles Fall Instructional League wraps up
The Baltimore Orioles will host the final two games of the team’s Fall Instructional League Oct. 5 and Oct. 8, at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota.
The Orioles will host the Philadelphia Phillies at 10 a.m. Oct. 5 and the Pittsburgh Pirates at 10 a.m. Oct. 8.
Games, which are free and open to the public, will be played on the main field with parking available in the east lot at no charge.
The Instructional League program focuses on individual development while providing additional playing time to help a player progress through the minor league system.
+ Cardinal Mooney volleyball
The Cardinal Mooney volleyball team defeated rival The Out-of-Door Academy 25-12, 19-25, 22-25, 25-21, 15-10 in district action Sept. 24.
Kerri McMahon led the Lady Cougars with 12 kills and 13 digs. Alexis James added four blocks and three kills. Kelli Firek contributed five kills and six blocks. Madison McMally added 14 kills.
Natalie Buffet had 13 kills and nine digs to power the Lady Thunder. Cameron Graham had 39 perfect passes, 11 digs and three aces. Reanna Gregory contributed four kills and three blocks.
With the loss, ODA falls to 6-2 (3-2).
