What began close to a year ago as a 'small, guerilla type of show,' has grown into today's Pickin' Picnic '” a formally permitted and organized showcase for local musicians, which drew thousands of people to the Bradenton Riverwalk in May, says creative director Wade Hamilton.

This Saturday, Oct. 19, the free concert returns with five local acts, and Hamilton hopes to build on the success of the first official event. A Bradenton native, he says he recognizes the value of an event like this.

'I've lived in Bradenton for 30 years,' he says. 'I've always asked myself, '˜What's missing?' This is an opportunity that hasn't always been around for local bands. A lot of the opportunities they have to play are in smaller venues or bar crowds. This is a chance for these musicians to get their names out there, and it's great to be a part of it.'

After a few informal shows, hosted by founding band Faceless Bandits, Hamilton joined as creative director, and after acquiring the proper permits, bands event organizers enjoyed success at the inaugural concert in May. Hamilton says he expects the second event to be even better, and that he hopes to continue to see it grow.

'Last time, I remember looking out at field full of people sitting on blankets and in lawn chairs, just enjoying the music,' says Hamilton. 'I hope we can continue to grow, and stay true to our mission '” free, local music.'
