Don’t know a menorah from a mezuzah?
Then, this class could be for you.
Temple Beth Israel is part of the Reform Movement, which nationally sponsors the program, “A Taste of Judaism … Are You Curious?”
In November, Beth Israel will host the three-session class, which is locally sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee.
The class is designed for people who have little to no Jewish background but are interested in learning more about Judaism.
Many participants are unaffiliated Jews who don’t know much about the religion, but the class also attracts many non-Jews and partners in interfaith relationships, along with children of interfaith couples.
“All sorts of people take this class, including people who want to know more about their Jewish colleagues’ religion and grandparents of children being raised Jewish who are not Jewish themselves.
The list goes on and on,” according to an FAQ about the class at reformjudaism.org.
The class is taught by rabbis and/or cantors who will teach participants the basics of Jewish texts, including how they illustrate Jewish values and thought and how they can apply to contemporary life.
There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion.
Classes take place at 7 p.m. Tuesdays, Nov. 5, through Nov. 19, at Temple Beth Israel, 567 Bay Isles Road.
