Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall will begin workshops with Booker High Law Academy in October to teach them about law through theater with "Chicago: The Musical."

Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall received an education grant from The Broadway League and will partner with the new Booker High Law Academy to explore various themes in the Chicago: the Musical.

The Broadway League gives this grant to 10 theaters across the country and is the national trade association of the Broadway industry.

The new Booker High Law Academy offers students the opportunity to receive and educational foundation in the legal profession and criminal justice system.

The project will include an exploration of various themes within Chicago: The Music, that are connected to the criminal justice system and will include guest speakers from the Sarasota community connected to the topic each week.

The program aims to connect to the show’s dramatic themes and characters to issues in criminal law.

It also encourages students to participate in the theatrics of the Academy’s law mock trial and to appreciate theater.

Students will begin the monthly workshops in October. They will explore the original cases of the musical to enhance their discussion and understanding of the material.

The program will have five monthly in school workshops featuring guest speakers from the legal system, journalism and the arts.
