A German dog with a Croation name is one of the newest members of the Sarasota Police Department (SPD).

Following the retirement of K9 Kuda after eight years of service, SPD has added K9 Andro to its ranks. Officer Nick Dominis, his handler, named the dog in honor of his father and his Croation heritage.

"Andro is a recognized warrior name by the citizens of Croatia,” Dominis said in a press release.

Dominis and Andro will spend the rest of the month bonding before attending a 480-hour K9 school the Florida Department of Law Enforcement mandates.

Including Andro, who cost roughly $8,000, SPD has four K9 units, according to SPD spokeswoman Genevieve Judge.

In other recent law enforcement animal news, Sarasota County Sheriff's Office K9 Ryker and Deputy Brian Biegel were recently certified in explosives detection by the National Police Canine Association.
