July 30
Deferred maintenance

8:18 p.m. — 500 block of De Narvaez Drive. Code Enforcement. A complaint prompted police to inspect a vacant house. The officer discovered an unkempt yard, vacant house and an algae-filled swimming pool with fish inside. Police contacted the property owner and issued a verbal warning.

July 31
Triple the trouble

5:54 p.m. — 500 block of Outrigger Lane. Alarm. Police responded to an alarm system at the same residence three times in one day. After being reached by police, the homeowner notified the out-of-state key holder of the calls.

Aug. 1
Just checking

11:01 p.m. — 4000 block of GMD. Suspicious Circumstance. Police stopped the driver of a truck hauling a mattress after seeing him leave a hotel that’s closed for renovations. The driver said he had permission to take the items, so the officer called the hotel’s owner to confirm that it was OK. Once confirmed, the man was released.

Aug. 2
No bones about it

11:31 a.m. — 2000 block of GMD. Disturbance. A man called police after a neighboring tenant claimed he would “break his bones” if he ever caught him smoking on the balcony the two share again. But the man hadn’t seen his neighbor make the threat, only heard him, and police were unable to locate him.

Aug. 4
Screaming siblings

9:34 p.m. — 1000 block of GMD. Disturbance. Police responded to a complaint about a family arguing in a condo parking lot. The officer found a sibling argument was at the center, so he separated the two and told the man to find a new hotel room.

Wet bandits
12:17 p.m. — 0 block of GMD. Miscellaneous Officer. A witness said he saw subjects in the back of a car throwing water balloons at pedestrians and other vehicles on the roadway. The witness said he saw a cyclist struck by a balloon and another balloon enter a vehicle through an open window. Police stopped the vehicle in question, and the subjects admitted to throwing the balloons from the moving vehicle. The officer seized the balloons, photographed them and destroyed them.

Buried bounty
4:13 p.m. — 1600 block of Shore Road. Found Property. A phone, wallet, keys and binoculars were turned into police after the items were found at the beach. Police have been unable to locate the owner, and the items were determined to have been on the beach for some time because the binoculars were full of sand.

Aug. 5
Unwanted wake-up call

10:47 a.m. — 600 block of Cedar Street. Traffic. A woman to called police claiming she’s woken up every morning when her neighbor revs up his motorcycle. The officer notified her neighbor, who rides his motorcycle every day to work, and he agreed to be courteous of her request.

Immobile motorhome
12:03 p.m. — 700 block of Longboat Court. Code Enforcement. After a large RV sat in a man’s driveway for three weeks, a neighbor called police to complain. The officer located the owner, notifying him of the town ordinance against motorhomes staying in a residential driveway for more than five days a month. The man agreed to park the vehicle at a friend’s house off the island.

Loaded laundry
4:36 p.m. — 200 block of Sands Point Road. Lost Property. A couple left an expensive load of laundry at an area resort, so they filed an insurance claim and called police after resort staff failed to locate their property. They said the laundry was worth more than $1,000, however, it has yet to be located.

Tree-trimming trespassers
7:24 p.m. — 5000 block of GMD. Property Damage. Several sea hibiscus trees were trimmed down from 10 feet to 5 feet without the owner’s permission. He had called police before with a similar complaint, but this time he said he wanted to press charges. He suspects a neighboring resort is trimming his trees to get a better view of the Gulf.

Aug. 8
Mystery owner

12:18 a.m. — 100 block of Shore Road. Code Enforcement. Police stopped a group of teenagers crossing private property while en route to the beach. After the officer asked a driver to get his wallet from his vehicle, he noticed a box containing drug paraphernalia. However, the driver said the items belonged to a pair of girls seen fleeing the scene, so the officer confiscated the property and issued a verbal warning.

Making quite the splash
3:54 p.m. — Longboat Pass Bridge. Suspicious Person. While in his squad car, an officer passed a teenager who was about to hop off a bridge into the water. After he went back to find the teen, he had already jumped, but a man on the beach below helped police find the subject. He was ticketed for jumping off state bridges.
