VIDEO: Sheriff's Office warns community of heat danger

Sarasota County is getting close to being in a formal heat advisory.

Over the next few days, temperatures could hit record highs, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office. The temperatures will feel like triple-digit heat.

According to the National Weather Service forecast for Sarasota this afternoon and Saturday, temperatures will be in the mid- to high 90s, but the heat index values will be between 105 and 107 degrees Fahrenheit.

Inside a closed vehicle, rising temperatures can become dangerous. The Sheriff’s Office is warning the community of the potentially fatal risks of leaving children and pets in the car.

The officer made a YouTube video showing how quickly the temperature can rise in a car. Within 11 minutes, the deputy’s temperature sensor recorded a 16-degree increase, from 94 degrees to 110 degrees Fahrenheit, in the interior of the vehicle.

Within the first five minutes, the deputy reported difficulty breathing, although not to the extent of needing medical attention, he said. After 10 minutes, he said he felt light-headed and fatigued.

A child’s body temperature rises five times faster than an adult, according to the video.

According to a statement by the Sheriff’s Office, 23 children in the U.S. have died this year from heat-related incidents in cars.
