To protect the county's youngest students, the Manatee County School District will vote to approve increased security measures at area elementary schools at its meeting at 5:45 p.m. Aug. 26.

The district reserved $1.68 million to hire 35 security personnel to occupy what school board member Dave Miner sees as "the most vulnerable" population of students.

The funding will come from the district's reserves in its 2014-2015 school year budget.

School Board Chairwoman Julie Aranibar hopes to the hired individuals, most who are veterans or retired law enforcement, will serve schools full time.
