Howard Swartz, 86, of Longboat Key and New City, N.Y., died Feb. 9.
Born Jan. 24, 1928, in Albany, N.Y., Mr. Swartz married Goldie Brenner Sept. 3, 1950, and the two lived in the Albany area, where he worked for the New York State Department of Labor until 1964.
In 1972, Mr. Swartz formed and became president of Industrial UI Services, an unemployment insurance cost control firm, where he served until 1989. He then retired and moved to Longboat Key.
Mr. Swartz loved baseball, basketball and bicycle riding. He rode up to 40 miles a day and went on several major bicycle trips in the United States and Europe.
Mr. Swartz and his wife established the Goldie Brenner Swartz and Howard Swartz Scholarship Fund at University at Albany, the State University of New York. The scholarship provides assistance to disabled students, primarily to those with vision impairments.
Mr. Swartz was preceded in death by his wife, Goldie; sisters, Sylvia and Anna; and brother, Billy.
He is survived by sons, Mark, of New City, and Barry, of Clarence, N.Y.; three grandsons; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
