Too hot to handle
10:52 a.m. — 2000 block of GMD. Fire. A faulty electrical outlet in a hot-water heater caused a fire in a condo unit. The resident and her nurse exited the unit without injury. The woman stayed at a hotel while repairs were made.
Gunwale growth
4:05 p.m. — 800 block of St. Judes Drive N. Abandoned Boat. The town’s code enforcement officer reported an abandoned boat that is in poor condition and has a tree growing from the gunwale. Police learned the owner of the home where the boat is tied is in the hospital.
Security check
6:10 p.m. — 500 block of Bay Isles Road. Suspicious Vehicle. A caller reported a suspicious vehicle near a bank ATM. It belonged to a service technician, who was accompanied by an armed guard for security.
Feb. 6
Cover-up operation
9:50 a.m. — 500 block of Bowsprit Lane. Parking. An anonymous caller complained because a car parked on the street had a cover over it. Police took no action because there was no violation.
Jet set
5:53 p.m. — 200 block of Sands Point Road. Lost/Missing Property. A man called police from his home in Canada after he realized his passport went missing while staying on Longboat Key. He said he kept the passport in a backpack that he never took out of his hotel room. He was able to re-enter Canada because he was flying by private jet and had filed a passenger manifest in advance.

10:27 a.m. — 1000 block of Bogey Lane. Traffic. Public Works employees had to shovel dirt out of the roadway after a dump truck spilled its load of dirt. Police warned the contractor about dropping contents from a moving vehicle.
Feb. 8
‘I do’ need you to keep it down
10:34 p.m. — Jewfish Key. Noise. Police received two complaints about loud music coming from a home on Jewfish Key, but the police boat wasn’t in service. They weren’t able to get onto the island but spoke to the owner of the house, who told police that the occupants rented the house for a wedding. Police told him he would be charged criminally if they received additional noise complaints.
