Sarasota elementary schools to celebrate Dr. Seuss

On Friday, Feb. 28 Sarasota County elementary schools will celebrate the 110th birthday of author Theodore Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, with “Embracing Dr. Seuss’ Differences Day.”

The all-day event is in partnership with the Sarasota non-profit Embracing Our Differences.

“Embracing Dr. Seuss’ Differences Day” will have more than 120 volunteers read aloud to 2,500 students from 153 classrooms throughout the county. The six chosen books are designed to stimulate conversations regarding diversity, bullying, character education and respect for others.

Geisel, who was born on March 2, published 46 children’s books during his life. Embracing Our Differences executive director Michael Shelton says the event will help students see the fun in reading as well as honor the late author.

Selected Dr. Seuss books are:

Kindergarten: “Hooper Humperdink...? Not Him!”

First Grade: “Horton Hatches an Egg”

Second Grade: “The Butter Battle Book”

Third Grade: “The Lorax”

Fourth Grade: “Hooray For Diffendoofer Day!”

Fifth Grade: “The Sneetches”
