Blast from the past

Ashton Elementary School students brought history to life when they dressed up as historical figures and their personal heroes for the school’s inaugural Morning at the Museum Thursday, Feb. 20.

First- and second-grade students acted as living monuments to important men and women from history and today. Teachers, families and other students were invited to interact with the “monuments” and ask questions.

First-grade teacher Whitney Tucker and second-grade teachers Susan Whitesides and Denise Isaacson organized the event and say they are looking forward to next year’s event.

“It’s going to be bigger and better,” they said.

It was a lot of work. I had to go back and forth between them.

What’s your favorite memory?
When I rode through Massachusetts to warn everyone the British were coming. Without alerting them, America would have been destroyed.

Were you scared when you led the Boston Tea Party?
No, because my friends and I just climbed on the ships in the middle of the night.

What is your favorite food?
Hot dogs — they served them at the games.

What was your favorite part of playing baseball? Any favorite position?
Hitting home runs was fun. I played shortstop for the Kansas City Monarchs in 1945. That was my favorite position, but my favorite team was the Brooklyn Dodgers.

How did it feel being the first African-American to play in major league baseball?
It felt great.

Where was your favorite place to live?
In Mansfield, Mo., where I wrote my books during the Great Depression.

What was your favorite pet?
Jack, the family’s bulldog, was my favorite pet. We would run down to Plum Creek together when I was younger.
