Obituary: Julius Sydney Rubel

Julius Sydney Rubel, 97, of Longboat Key, died Dec. 29.

Born Dec. 2, 1916, in Aberdeen, Miss., he graduated from Vanderbilt University and the University of Michigan Law School. He was a first lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II and received a commendation from the secretary of the Navy for expediting the building and installation of Mulberry Harbors at Omaha Beach, which allowed troops to land on D-Day.

Mr. Rubel and his late wife, Joyce Saks Rubel, lived in Gadsden, Ala., for many years and owned Saks Clothing Co. until 1979, when they retired to Longboat Key.

Mr. Rubel is survived by his partner of 25 years, Frances Ross; sister, Ann Rubel Roth, of Chicago; daughter Judith Atkins, of Gadsden, Susan Zuker, of New York City, and Carol Berman, of Bethesda, Md.; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and two more on the way.
