+ Pirates to host wrestling tourneys
Braden River High will host the 2014 Manatee County IBT Wrestling Championships Jan. 21 (JV) and Jan. 22 (varsity).
Weigh-in begins at 3 p.m., and the first championship round begins at 4 p.m.
Participating teams include: Braden River, Lakewood Ranch, Bayshore, Manatee, Palmetto, Southeast and St. Stephen’s. Admission costs $7 for adults.
Braden River will host the Class 2A-District 10 Wrestling Championships Feb. 1.
Weigh-in begins at 9 a.m., with competition slated for 11 a.m. Admission costs $6.
Participating teams include: Braden River, Lakewood Ranch, Palmetto, Sarasota, Lennard, Venice and Sebring.
+ Golf pro to hold fundraiser for GSJGA
Sarasota teaching professional Tim Conaway, an instructor at the newly founded Barry Cheesman Golf Academy, will be conducting a free lesson day Jan. 24 at Tatum Ridge Golf Links.
Each private lesson will last 30 minutes. In lieu of payment, Conaway is asking for a $30 voluntary donation to benefit the Greater Sarasota Junior Golf Association.
Conaway is a certified Golf Channel SwingFix instructor. He also is on the GSJGA board and runs its summer series golf tournaments.

+ Registration now underway for BRSC
Registration for the Braden River Soccer Club’s spring recreational program has begun.
The eight-game season, which is open to players ages 4 to 18, will run March 2 through May 4. Games will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Sundays, with the possibility of some U11 to U18 games Saturdays.
Cost is $85 for returning fall 2013 players and $105 for new players. On-site registration will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 16; 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 18; and 1 to 3 p.m. Jan. 19.

+ Monsters LAX gears up for season
Monsters Lacrosse is seeking players for its spring high school lacrosse season, which begins Jan. 20.
The league is open to all high school-age boys in Manatee and Sarasota counties whose schools don’t offer lacrosse. No experience is necessary.
Cost is $375 and includes uniforms and equipment.

+ 13U Florida River Dawgs
The 13U Florida River Dawgs travel baseball team wrapped up its fall season with a pair of tournament victories.
On Dec. 14 and Dec. 15, the River Dawgs went 5-0 to win the Suncoast Select Toys for Tots Tournament.
The River Dawgs followed up their tournament victory with a championship at the 2013-14 ESPN New Year’s Classic Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. The team competed against squads from Illinois, Florida, Tennessee and Ohio.
“This win speaks to our depth and especially our pitching depth,” coach Scott Kolbe says. “We used six different pitchers.”
Championship players include: Anthony Squitieri, Mason Kolbe, Collin Goda, Chase Binkley, Rob Arakel, Caleb Whitson, Danny Rodriguez, Bryan Gagg, Daniel Tart, Hunter Bogumil and John Dipasqua.
