+ Orioles to hold Birdland Golf Classic
The Baltimore Orioles will host the 4th annual Birdland Golf Classic Feb. 17 at Laurel Oak Country Club.
The event begins with lunch and registration at 11 a.m. followed by a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. The classic features a silent auction and the opportunity to play a round of golf with current and former Orioles players and coaches, including Buck Showalter, Chris Davis, J.J. Hardy and Adam Jones, among others.
Registration is now open for golfers and corporate partners. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Miracle League of Manasota. Since its inception, the Birdland Golf Classic has raised more than $96,000 for the non-profit organization.

+ Golf pro to hold fundraiser for GSJGA
Sarasota teaching professional Tim Conaway, an instructor at the newly founded Barry Cheesman Golf Academy, will be conducting a free lesson day Jan. 24 at Tatum Ridge Golf Links.
Each private lesson will last 30 minutes. In lieu of payment, Conaway is asking for a $30 voluntary donation to benefit the Greater Sarasota Junior Golf Association.
Conaway is a certified Golf Channel SwingFix instructor. He also is on the GSJGA board and runs its summer series golf tournaments.

+ Monsters LAX gears up for spring season
Monsters Lacrosse is seeking players for its spring high school lacrosse season, which begins Jan. 20.
The league is open to all high school-age boys in Manatee and Sarasota counties whose schools do not offer lacrosse. No experience is necessary.
Practices will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, at the Premier Sports Campus in Lakewood Ranch.
Cost is $375 and includes home and away uniforms, helmet sticker, equipment and the cost of coaches, referees and practice fields. US Lacrosse membership is mandatory. Visit USLacrosse.org to join or renew your membership.

+ SASA accepting scholarship apps
The Sarasota Area Sports Alliance is awarding a limited number of scholarships to qualified high school student-athletes in Sarasota and Manatee counties.
Scholarship criteria includes: commitment to sports, academic achievement, community involvement and financial need.
The application deadline is March 21. Questions and completed applications will only be received via email at [email protected].

+ Sarasota High girls weightlifting
The Sarasota High girls weightlifting team had eight lifters finish in the top three, including three first-place finishers, at the District 8 Sub-Regional meet Jan. 9, at Sarasota High.
The eight lifters will now move on to the District 8 State Qualifier Jan. 22 at Charlotte High.
