Obituary: Mary Nelson

Mary Nelson, 93, of Longboat Key, died May 24.

Born and raised in Ninety Six, S.C., Mrs. Nelson played on the winning state high school basketball team in 1936. She graduated from Winthrop College with a degree in education and pursued further graduate studies at the University of North Carolina.

Mrs. Nelson taught elementary school in Columbia, S.C., Minneapolis and Kansas City, Mo. For 22 years, she and her family lived in Canada and Switzerland. She was a substitute teacher, Sunday school teacher, church volunteer and gracious hostess.

An avid traveler, Mrs. Nelson visited Scandinavia, Russia, Greece, Israel, Egypt, Australia, Indonesia and Hong Kong.

Mrs. Nelson is survived by her husband of 67 years, Lowell; daughters Mary Jo and Christine; and five grandchildren.
