WEEKEND BEST BET: Freedom Fest

It may only be a quarter-mile long, but the Longboat Key Freedom Fest parade goes the distance on community charm.

Patriotic participants of all ages and their pups are invited to don their most festive red, white and blue attire and march down Longboat Key’s Main Street — Bay Isles Road — in this annual Fourth of July celebration.

Hosted by the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce, the All-American morning begins with the parade line up at 8:30 a.m. Friday, July 4, between Bank of America and SunTrust Bank on Bay Isles Road. Whether you’re walking with your dog or riding a bike, get into the spirit by decorating your wheels, wagons and faces for the parade that begins at 9 a.m.

Old-fashioned games and prizes will follow at Bicentennial Park, near Longboat Key Town Hall. This year, a face painter from the Circus Arts Conservatory will also join in the fun.

While the kids play, adults can head to the food area to enjoy their favorite breakfast items such as waffles, pancakes, pastries and coffee.
