Sand Sculpture Camp

Sarasota County Parks and Recreation’s Sand Sculpture Camp held its second day of this week’s session Tuesday, on Siesta Key Beach. The camp teaches children how to build basic sand sculptures, including towers, using everyday tools.

On the first day, campers learned the importance of a good “pound-up,” or base made of sand. After a lesson by instructor and master sculptor Bill Knight, of the Sand Lovers, campers worked on their pound-ups and towers, which had to feature one door and two windows.

Why did you choose sand sculpture camp?
I like to do art, and I thought this would be a good fit. Plus, I like the beach.

What’s been your favorite part of camp so far?
Learning how to make tower sculptures.

That’s cool — how was your first sculpture?
Yeah it was, but my sculpture was pretty — no really — terrible.
