Casperson Beach is currently closed while authorities investigate a plane crash that killed a man and seriously injured his daughter Sunday.

A single-engine aircraft made an emergency landing on the beach before 3 p.m., killing 36-year-old Ommy Irizarry. According to a Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office incident report, the pilot had made a distressed call to Venice Airport before attempting to land on the south Sarasota County beach.

Emergency personnel transported Oceana Irizarry, 9, by Bayflite to All Children’s Hospital. She is currently listed in critical condition, according to an email from Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Wendy Rose.

Ommy Irizarry was a sergeant in the U.S. Army stationed at Ft. Stewart, Ga.

Englewood resident Karl Komomoor, the pilot of the aircraft, and passenger David Theen, also an Englewood resident, were not injured.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board continue to investigate the incident, and are scheduled to dismantle and transport the wreckage from the beach this afternoon, Rose said.

"This is a heart-wrenching situation,"said Maj. Gen. Mike Murray in a statement from Ft. Stewart. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Irizarry family."
