Braden River High instructors take first in state STEM competition

Two East County high school educators received state recognition in a competition between high school- and college-level educators.

Braden River High engineering teachers Gil Burlew and David Sheppard won first-place at the State STEM Manufacturing Showcase Competition May 29, according to a June 12 press release.

Burlew and Sheppard's presentation, titled "Persistence of Vision," showed students and teachers a process to manufacture a device that displays binary codes.

The duo was the only high school educator group selected among the top six finalists.

The educators competed in the showcase as part of the STEM — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — Manufacturing Summit, held in Orlando.
