Local lacrosse players win national tournament
Cardinal Mooney senior Caroline Krupa and The Out-of-Door Academy seniors Kimmy Comito and Abby Bannar helped lead the Gulf Coast Florida team to a first-place finish in the Iroquois division of the 2014 US Lacrosse Women’s National Tournament last month, in Maryland.

More than 1,250 of the nation’s top high school girls lacrosse players competed in the tournament.

Gulf Coast Florida went undefeated throughout the tournament, outscoring its opponents 41-23. The team defeated North Carolina (12-7), Los Angeles (15-6) and Arizona (14-10) in pool play before holding on to beat Tennessee 10-9 in the championship game.

+ Orioles GCL season underway
The Orioles Gulf Coast League team officially welcomed the start of the 2014 season June 20.

The GCL includes 14 teams in Florida and gives recently drafted or signed players their first experience in professional baseball.

The Orioles will play 30 home games at Ed Smith Stadium now through Aug. 28. All games are free and open to the public. Parking, located in the east lot on the corner of 12th Street and Tuttle Avenue, also is free.

Sixty-six players teed off in the Greater Sarasota Junior Golf Association Summer Series event June 16, at Jacaranda West Country Club in Venice.

+ Battle of the Sexes upcoming
The Sarasota Racquet Club will hold a Battle of the Sexes tennis match at 10:30 a.m. July 20.

The match, which is part of the Totally Tennis Exhibition Series, will feature local professional Nate Griffin versus former WTA champion Tiffany Davis.

Play will continue Aug. 17 with a doubles match between Joe Bachmann, national 70s champion, and Larry Denyes taking on Sophie Edwards, national 12s champion, and Gia Cohen.

The battle of the sexes series will conclude Sept. 21 with a doubles match between Antoine Sanchez and Tyler Zink and Maria Ross and Ingrid Neel.

Admission to all matches is free and open to the public.
