+ Rage advance in Region C Cup
The Braden River Rage Maroon U11 girls soccer team defeated the Tampa Chargers 2-1 in the Region C Cup Division 2 quarterfinals March 9.

The Chargers were ranked 12th in the state and were undefeated before falling to the Rage.
The Rage now is ranked 34th in the state and will face the Fishhawk White team, which is ranked 33rd, in the semifinals March 15 in Brandon.

Players include: Maya Wellard, Amelia Vazquez, Jordan Brown, Kaylee Cooper, Stephanie Bobrek, Kendall Wade, Jordan Golden, Jenna Santiago, Taylor Golden, Lauren Golon and Juliana Austin.

+ Ellenton coach nominated for award
Southwest Figure Skating Club coach Amanda Evora recently was named a nominee for the 2014 Professional Skaters Association Sonja Henie Award.

The Sonja Henie Award, which has been given annually since 1996, is presented to a female professional skater or coach who has brought recognition to the sport in a positive and favorable manner.
The 2014 nominees include Evora, who competed in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, 2014 ice dancing gold medalist Meryl Davis and choreographer Cindy Stuart.

Previous Sonja Henie Award winners include Peggy Fleming, Dorothy Hamill, Kristi Yamaguchi and Michelle Kwan, among others.

+ Mooney blanks Admiral Farragut
The Cardinal Mooney boys tennis team defeated Admiral Farragut 7-0 March 4.

Andrew Von Johnn, Jesse Maun, Greg Short, Shane Black and Robby Howard all won singles matches for the Cougars.

Von Johnn and Maun also were victorious at No. 1 doubles. Black and Nick Melone were victorious at No. 2 doubles.

+ ODA boys lacrosse picks up district win
The Out-of-Door Academy boys lacrosse team defeated rival St. Stephen’s 15-9 March 5.
Andrew Romano scored five goals to lead the way for the ODA. Ben Martin and Jeremy Herrin each added three goals.
With the win, the Thunder captured its second district victory.

+ Lakewood Ranch High Winter Athletics
The Florida High School Athletic Association announced its Academic Team Champions for the 2013-14 winter season March 4, and Lakewood Ranch High leads the overall standings for Class 7A.

The girls basketball team finished first in Class 7A with a cumulative team GPA of 3.65. The wrestling team finished second in Class 2A (3.353), while the girls weightlifting team also placed second (3.624). The cheerleading squad ranked third in Class 1A (3.561).

The Lakewood Ranch boys basketball team placed fourth in Class 7A (3.237), and the girls soccer team ranked fifth in Class 4A (3.629).

The Mustangs are third overall in the Florida High School Athletic Association Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup all-sports award standings for Class 7A. The Lakewood Ranch boys rank first with 54.5 points.
