On Tuesday, March 18, producing Artistic Director Michael Donald Edwards announced Asolo Repertory Theatre’s 2014-15 season. Here it is:
“A Midsummer Night’s Dream”
This is the New Stages Tour Shakespearean production. In previous years, third-year FSU/Asolo Conservatory students performed “Antigone,” “Hamlet,” “Macbeth,” and “Romeo and Juliet.” Last season, “Romeo and Juliet” toured in performances that reached more than 14,000 students. This Oct. and Nov. will feature just one team of actors as opposed to previous year’s two teams.
“South Pacific”
Nov. 14 through Dec. 28
This classic Rogers and Hammerstein musical will feature new orchestrations specifically arranged for Asolo Rep. It will be directed by Rob Ruggiero who directed this season’s “Show Boat.”
“The Matchmaker”
Jan. 9 through April 11
This play by Thornton Wilder is one most would know as the inspiration for the musical adaptation, “Hello Dolly!” Peter Amster will direct this production about mistaken identities in what Michael Donald Edwards refers to as a “19th century version of Match.com.”
“Good People”
Jan. 16 through Feb. 26
This play by David Lindsay-Abaire is the humorous telling of a bingo-loving Margie Walsh who can barely cover her bills. It tells a message of a woman struggling to better herself while still remaining connected to her roots.
“Both Your Houses”
Jan. 23 through April 12
This political satire by Maxwell Anderson directed by Frank Galati shows how little congress has changed. It follows a divided congress, and an idealistic congressman who hopes to expose corruption. It is a production Michael Donald Edwards says no one has heard of, but promises it will be great.
“Our Betters”
March 13 through April 18
This play by W. Somerset Maugham (the token British playwright of the season) is one Michael Donald Edwards compared to Downtown Abbey. It tells the story of five rich, American women seeking broke British aristocrats.
“It Only Takes a Moment”
May 1 through May 24
This world premiere will be a full look at Jerry Herman’s songbook. Herman is the man who wrote “Hello Dolly,” “Mame” and “La Cage aux Follies.” Herman currently lives in Miami and gave the theater and director Gordon Greenberg permission to present a fully staged revue of his works.
New Work
April 2 through 26
Negotiations for this new work is still currently in the works and will be announced in the future. It’s the same position in the Asolo Rep season format as plays “Red,” “Venus in Fur,” and “4000 Miles.”
Summer Musical
May 30 through June 21
To be announced.
