+ Mill tax helps Sarasota County charter schools
Dear Editor:
There are 10 charter schools in Sarasota County and each one receives funds from the one-mill tax referendum. Although not compulsory, the school board chooses to share that money with the charter schools. Unlike state funds that come with mandates, these dollars can be used for discretionary purposes. My school, Sarasota Suncoast Academy, receives $500,000 per year, and as principal, I am thankful we have the flexibility to use that money for areas of greatest need.

What sets SSA apart from other schools is that we provide all our teachers with “Responsive Classroom Training.” This is a teaching approach that addresses the social, emotional and academic needs of each student. It supports the idea that social and academic learning go hand-in-hand, and that higher student achievement is obtained when each of these areas are addressed. The referendum dollars pay for that research-based training, which has proven to bring successful results.

In SSA, the referendum funds also cover the costs of art and music programs and a technology program. The Legislature mandated computerized math testing, but did not provide the dollars to buy computers. Thanks to the referendum, we were able to purchase the technology needed for not only testing, but for extended learning opportunities. We also use the money to cover the extra 30 minutes added to the school day, providing more time for student learning than the state offers. In addition, charter schools set their own salaries and these funds allow us to be competitive.

Although under the umbrella of the school district, charter schools are independently run, with our own board and our own specialization. They give parents the opportunity to choose an educational program that is best for their child and their philosophy of child raising. In Sarasota County, the choices are more extensive than in most school districts around the country. Thanks to the support of the community and the past referendums, charter schools here are able to further enhance our individual educational environments for the benefit of our students.

+ My vote is yes on Sarasota schools referendum
Dear Editor:
Communities reflect the quality of their schools in home values, services and quality of life. The best places to live in our country also have the best public schools for their children. They offer varied and diverse programs, visionary and thoughtful leaders.  They select and count on caring and well-trained teachers and support staff. They are focused on their students and committed to their success and achievement. They have solid financial operations and the understanding and support of their communities. The Sarasota County School System, one of five in the state with an “A” rating,  is ranked third of 67 county school districts in the state of Florida. It leads the way in providing excellent educational opportunities and has earned your continued support with this millage referendum.

Please join me in voting “YES” on this referendum on March 25.  Together, we can continue to make a positive and significant difference in the quality of the public schools in our community.
