Cops Corner: Longboat Key

March 14
It wasn’t me
12:04 a.m. — Intersection of Longboat Drive South and Linley Street. Suspicious Person. A man who had no lights on his bicycle told police he had nothing to do with an alarm that was sounding. He said he did not have identification and told police he lives “here and there.” The man’s uncle confirmed he is staying at his home.

No license
8:48 a.m. — 2100 block of GMD. Traffic. A driver told police he had never had a driver’s license and gave police his Mexican ID card after the town’s license camera system notified police that the registered owner of the vehicle had a suspended driver’s license. Police gave him a notice to appear in court.

Memory lapse
6:08 p.m. — 5400 block of GMD. Public Service. A man reported that his convertible had possibly been stolen from his home. Bradenton Beach officers found the vehicle at the city’s marina less than an hour after police issued an alert. The man said he then remembered taking the car to the city’s marina the night before and driving his boat home.

March 16
Sending out an S.O.S.
10:03 a.m. — Off the Key. Boat. Police found a boat that was reportedly distressed. The operator said that the boat ran aground the night before, and when he and his passenger woke up, they were drifting and had no fuel. Police tied the boat to a dock, and the occupants’ friend brought fuel.

Discovery phase
12:06 p.m. — 5400 block of GMD. Property Recovered. A Sarasota County detective approached police and turned in a wallet with credit cards, $4 and a pair of sunglasses.

No cause for alarm
7:44 p.m. — 500 block of Bay Isles Road. Public Service. Police attempted to close the door of a BMW that was left open but activated the vehicle’s alarm. An employee of the place of worship where the car was parked said he would notify the owner during a break.

March 19
Should have gone to Daytona
12:02 a.m. — 1000 block of GMD. Noise. A security manager reported a party in a unit and said there had been several complaints about excessive noise and fireworks coming from the unit during the week. Police went to the unit and spoke with the owners’ 18-year-old granddaughter, who is staying with friends during spring break. Police gave her 15 minutes to comply with the town’s noise ordinance.

Pet threat
1:54 p.m. — 3400 block of Winding Oaks Drive. Civil Disturbance. A man threatened to get his gun and shoot his neighbor’s dog if the dog comes near his home again. The neighbor said the dog had urinated earlier on the grass in a common area of the complex. The man drove by and yelled that the man let the dog defecate on his lawn and did not clean it up. The neighbor said he lost his temper and believes the area where the man was walking the dog is his property. He apologized and agreed to speak with the neighborhood association about pet rules.
