Obituary: Leon Eyges Rogers

Leon Eyges Rogers, 96, died April 28.

Born Jan. 9, 1918, in Brookline, Mass., Mr. Rogers graduated from Huntington School of Boston and earned a degree in English literature at Brown University in 1940. He spent many summers, as a camper and counselor, at Camp Brunonia in Maine.

Mr. Rogers was a talented athlete, and while at Brookline High School, he held the Massachusetts state record for the 300-yard dash. At Huntington School, he received the Washburn Cup for best athlete in the school. He was a varsity player for baseball and football, and was captain of the track team.

During his time at Brown, Mr. Rogers was a member of the Owl and Ring Society; one of the originators of WBRU, the Brown University radio station; and was the sports editor of the Brown Daily Herald for three years. He was also a member of the Ivy League Club and Brown University Club.

Mr. Rogers served in the U.S. Navy Reserve as a lieutenant senior grade for four years during World War II.

Mr. Rogers was vice president of sales and marketing for two publicly traded corporations and general manager of a privately owned company. During the course of his career, he lived in New York, Chicago and Connecticut.

He was a founder and president of the Trojan Club, a Brookline Boys Club, which was founded in 1931. When he retired in 1981 to Longboat Key, he became a member of the Longboat Key Club and a strong supporter of fine arts and culture in Sarasota.

Mr. Rogers is survived by his wife, Annette; two daughters, Patricia and Victoria Lee; two stepdaughters, Ronnie and Carol; a sister, Gloria Gopenl; and two granddaughters.

Interment will be at Sarasota National Cemetery.
