Obituary: Kenneth Hugh Barr

Kenneth Hugh Barr, 73, of Sarasota, died May 8.

Born Feb. 20, 1941, in Chicago, Mr. Barr lived in Rankin, Ill., and Helena, Ark., before settling in Florida. Mr. Barr graduated from Peacock Military Academy in 1959.

Mr. Barr was on active duty in the United States Air Force from 1963 to 1967, and continued to serve until 1969. Barr attended the University of South Florida, serving as the captain of the school’s bowling team from 1967 to 1968.

Beginning in December 1968, Mr. Barr owned and operated Shenkel’s Restaurant on Longboat Key with his mother, Edith Barr Dunn. The two ran the restaurant until its closing in April 1994. Alongside Bob Richards, Mr. Barr went on to own and operate the Sports Page Bar & Grille in downtown Sarasota from 1995 until April 2013.

Mr. Barr was a longtime member of the Longboat Key Club and Gator Creek Golf Club, and served as the president of Gator Creek from 2012 to 2013.

Mr. Barr is survived by his mother, Edith Barr Dunn; two stepbrothers, Smokey Campbell and Craig Campbell; and a stepsister, Katie Shannon.

A funeral service is planned for 1 p.m. Thursday, May 15, at St. Martha Catholic Church, 200 N. Orange Ave., in Sarasota. Interment will follow at Sarasota Military Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers or other gifts, donations can be made to Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation or Tidewell Hospice.
