On May 8, Girls Inc. of Sarasota County received free energy upgrades from Florida Power & Light Co. (FPL) with the help of local contractors as part of a nonprofit energy makeover.

The girls involved in the program worked alongside energy experts, including FPL volunteer Jose Labrador, to install energy-efficient CFL light bulbs and learned tips on how to conserve energy at home.

With the implementation of the program, it is estimated that Girls Inc. will save $2,000 annually.

Improvements include the installation of programmable thermostats to maximize efficiency, the installation of energy-efficient lighting to reduce the expense of energy bills and the installation of lighting occupancy sensors, timers and other energy improvements.
