+ Sarasota girls win regional crown

Angelina Grebe crossed the finish line in 19 minutes, 30.20 seconds to win the individual crown and power the Sarasota High girls cross-country team to a first-place finish at the Class 3A-Region 3 meet Nov. 7 in Estero.

The Lady Sailors remained tied for first place with Fort Myers after the top five runners crossed the finish line and relied on their sixth runner — Hadleigh Schwartz — to break the tie. Schwartz finished 27th (21:30.00) ahead of Fort Myers’ sixth runner in 30th to give Sarasota the title.

Allison Wright finished eighth in 20:40.90, followed by Sage Lyons (11th, 20:48.40), MacKenzie Brown (18th, 21:09.70) and Amber Kerry (21:11.60).

In the boys race, Sarasota finished second overall with 73 points, finishing three points behind regional champion Fort Myers.

Zack Summerall finished as the regional runner-up in 16:41.50. Adam Bradtmueller was fourth in 16:57.50, followed by Brady Hill (16th, 17:44.00), Renier Escalona-Diaz (21st, 18:07.40) and Cesar Pozas (36th, 18:36.30).

Both teams will advance to the Class 3A Cross-Country Championships Nov. 15, in Tallahassee.

+ Rams dominate in the pool at championships
The Riverview High boys swim team scored 281 points to win the Class 4A Swimming & Diving Championships Nov. 7, in Stuart.

The Rams, who finished 128 points ahead of second-place Clearwater Countryside, captured their first state title since 1980.

Carter Page won the 500-yard freestyle in a new personal best time of 4 minutes, 25.74 seconds. He also finished second in the 200 freestyle, posting another personal best time of 1:39.61.

Campbell Lee also won an individual state title, capturing the 100 breaststroke in 56.84. Lee also finished second in the 200 individual medley. The Rams 200 medley relay team finished second in 1:36.04.

Drew Clark earned a bronze medal in the 500 freestyle while Riverview’s 400 freestyle relay team won a silver medal in 3:09.65.

On the girls side, the Lady Rams, who were vying for their fifth-consecutive state crown, finished third overall with 156.5 points.

Nancy Hu finished second in both the 200 IM (2:04.48) and the 100 butterfly (56.02)

+ Riverview cross-country teams headed to state meet
The Riverview High boys and girls cross-country teams both qualified for the Class 4A Cross-Country Championships Nov. 15, in Tallahassee after posting top six finishes at the Class 4A-Region 2 meet Nov. 8, in North Port.

Jessica Lonas finished sixth in 19 minutes, 26.50 seconds to lead the Lady Rams to a third-place overall finish. Riverview scored 119 points to finish behind North Port (65) and Newsome (71).

Robyn Natherson finished 17th (19:54.60) followed by Michaelie Grajalez (27th, 20:21.40), Elayna Goodman (28th, 20:22.30) and Olivia Kracht (66th, 21:37.20).

The Riverview boys team scored 155 points to finish fifth overall. Blake Riley led the way for the Rams, finishing third in 16:15.10. Matthew Berman finished seventh in 16:23.00, followed by Warran Grajalez (14th, 16:44.40), Read Quarles (74th, 18:06.80) and Zachary Michel (77th, 18:12.60).

+ Cougars to send six to state championships
Six Cardinal Mooney High swimmers qualified for the Class 1A Swimming & Diving Championships Nov. 15, in Stuart.

Jillian Santiago was the lone girl to advance for Cardinal Mooney, qualifying in both the 100- and 200-yard freestyles.

Austin Katz (100 backstroke and 200 freestyle), Matthew Garcia (100 backstroke and 200 freestyle), Matthew Nutter (100 and 200 freestyles) and Emanuele Rossi (100 and 200 freestyles) all qualified for two individual events. Vinny Lijoi will represent Cardinal Mooney in the 500 freestyle.

The boys 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays also qualified for the state meet.

The Cardinal Mooney boys finished fourth overall at the Class 1A-Region 3 meet Nov. 8, in St. Petersburg, while the girls finished eighth.

+ Lady Cougars open the season with shutout
The Cardinal Mooney girls soccer team blanked Bayshore 5-0 in its season opener Nov. 4.

Skylar Jungers scored two goals to lead the way for the Lady Cougars. Alex Byers, Sarah Quick and Jill Polk each added a goal. Polk also had an assist along with Caitlin Telford and Katrina Winkler.
