Joyce Janeway, 86, of Longboat Key, died Oct. 27.
Born April 2, 1928, Mrs. Janeway grew up in Detroit and graduated from Vassar College.
Mrs. Janeway was an active promoter for many social causes. She received the Detroit Volunteer of the Year award in 1966 and was elected president of the Detroit League of Women Voters in 1969. She was a founding member and chairwoman of the Michigan Housing Coalition, the Fair Housing Center of Detroit and the Michigan Housing Trust Fund. In 2006, she received a service award from the FHC-Detroit for more than 25 years of service as an active tester, including service as the first testing supervisor in 1977, and a two-term chairperson of the FHC-Detroit Board of Directors.
Mrs. Janeway enjoyed walking on the beach and in Longboat Key’s Durante Park, gardening, birdwatching and reading.
Mrs. Janeway is survived by her husband, Richard Mittenthal; children Marilyn, Robert, John and Peter; and four grandchildren.
