John Joseph Stevenson, 78, died Nov. 18.
Born Dec. 17, 1935, in Elizabeth, N.J., Mr. Stevenson grew up in Pennside, Pa., and graduated from Central Catholic High School, where he starred on the basketball and track teams.
Mr. Stevenson received his bachelor’s degree in marketing in 1957 from the University of Notre Dame along with a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He was a proud member of the Notre Dame Monogram Club and earned this privilege as a three-year member of the varsity track team; his specialty was the pole vault.
Mr. Stevenson spent many years with the American Telephone and Telegraph Co. He returned to Reading, Pa., in 1974 and became co-founder of the Berkshire Travel Agency, which allowed him and his wife, Pat, to see the world together. Their favorite destination was their winter home on Longboat Key.
Mr. Stevenson was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Maureen Patricia Stevenson. He is survived by his children John, Kevin, James and Mary; brother, James; and 10 grandchildren.
A memorial Mass and remembrance of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Dec. 30, at St. Ignatius Loyola Roman Catholic Church, 2810 St. Alban’s Drive, Whitfield, PA 19608. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m.
