+ ODA Swimming
The Out-of-Door Academy girls swim team continued its undefeated season with a 156-134 victory over Port Charlotte Sept. 30.
Joie Eckhard won the 200- and 500-yard freestyles while Kate Patrice won the 50 freestyle and the 100 butterfly.
Imola Csendes captured the 100 freestyle. She then teamed up with Eckhard, Patrice and Reece Whatmore to win the 200 freestyle relay. Csendes, Eckhard, Patrice and Amber Bond won the 400 freestyle relay.
On the boys side, ODA fell to Port Charlotte 165-127, but several swimmers set new school records.
Zach Szmania set a new school record in the 200 individual medley, winning the event in 2 minutes, 23.75 seconds. He also broke the school record in the 100 breaststroke with a winning time of 1:13.78.
Szmania then joined Charles Hayes, Matthew Leonard and Laszlo Tengerdy on the winning 200 medley relay team, which set a new school record with a time of 1:59.09.
Sarsen Whatmore broke his own school record in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:29.12. Hayes won the 100 backstroke.
ODA returns to action Oct. 8 at Lemon Bay.
+ Bulldogs battle Wildcats in wet weather
The East Manatee Bulldogs posted a pair of wins against the Manatee Wildcats Sept. 27, at G.T. Bray Park.
The Junior PeeWee team won 27-0 while the Junior Midget team won 28-0. The PeeWee, Junior Midget and Unlimited teams spent the second half battling pouring rain, in addition to the Wildcats.
Ryan Franks scored a pair of touchdowns, and Anthony Marino added a touchdown for the Junior Midget team.
The Mitey Mite (36-14), PeeWee (20-14) and Unlimited (35-7) teams all suffered losses.
+ Lady Cougars tame Lady Thunder
The Cardinal Mooney volleyball team defeated district rival The Out-of-Door Academy 25-11, 25-19, 29-31, 25-14 Oct. 1.
Maddie McNally had 12 kills and eight digs to lead the way for the Lady Cougars. Keri McMahon added eight kills and 13 digs. Sarah Tonitis and Brooke Picchi had six kills each. Annie Shaw finished with 32 assists and 11 digs.
Natalie Buffett powered ODA with 11 kills and two aces. Taylor Albano and Reanna Gregory added seven kills each.
+ Mustangs tee off in Qdoba tourney
The Lakewood Ranch High boys golf team shot a combined 604 to finish seventh overall at the Qdoba Tournament of Champions Oct. 3 and Oct. 4, at Providence Golf Club in Davenport.
The tournament showcases the top three teams from the previous year across all three golf classifications.
Lakewood finished second in Class 3A behind Lithia Newsome (599). American Heritage shot 577, including a 7-under-par 281 the second day, to win the tournament.
Charlie Sun fired a 70-73 to earn medalist honors both days for the Mustangs. Sun’s 1-under-par 143 tied him for fifth individually. Spence Schultz shot 148 to finish 12th.
