James Francis Hanrahan, 80, of Sarasota, died Oct. 14.
Born Sept. 10, 1934, in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mr. Hanrahan grew up in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn and attended Brooklyn Preparatory School. He loved rooting for his beloved Brooklyn Dodgers.
Mr. Hanrahan graduated from Fordham University in 1960. He spent his professional career in London, New York City and Florham Park, N.J., as an executive for Exxon Corp. He had many professional accomplishments, which included developing an accounting software system that is still used today. He retired in 1989 to Longboat Key, where after several years of playing tennis and creating new friendships, he began a second career in residential real estate, working for Michael Saunders & Co.
His greatest passion and love was for his wife, Gloria, and surrounding family. The Hanrahans met in 1954, and they enjoyed many lifelong, wonderful, precious moments.
Mr. Hanrahan’s outgoing personality, optimism, kindheartedness and compassion touched many lives.
Mr. Hanrahan is survived by his wife of 58 years, Gloria; daughters Maureen Collins, of Randolph, N.J., and Karen Sirkin, of Trumbull, Conn.; sons David, of Randolph, and Matthew, of Sarasota; and six grandchildren.
A celebration of life took place Sunday, at Toale Brothers Funeral Home in Sarasota. Burial services will take place Friday, at St. John Cemetery, Queens, N.Y.
