Rainforest Masks of Costa Rica
The lush plant life of the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens brings to mind tropical wildlife of colorful birds, reptiles, amphibians and an endless assortment of jaguars, leopards and monkeys. Though the botanical gardens don’t have any wildlife besides a pond of koi fish and an armada of visiting butterflies, the exotic wildlife of the rainforests and jungles of the world are personified by the Borucan Indians of Costa Rica’s colorful exhibition of tribal masks. This is the 11th year the Borucan Indians have collaborated with the Selby Gardens’ Museum of Botany and the Arts; the exhibition and sale of the dozens of masks on display runs through April 17. Proceeds from the art sale contribute to the Borucan village as well as the garden. Carved from balsa and cedar trees, the masks are like miniature totem poles with various animals artfully placed on the masks. Toucans, tree frogs and leopards morph into the eyes, mouth and jaw of the various masks.

Last chance to ‘Fly’
This is the last weekend to see Florida Studio Theatre’s stunning and inspirational production of “Fly.” Written by Trey Ellis and Ricardo Khan, “Fly” tells the story of four African-American pilots of the Tuskegee Airmen who overcome racism and adversity throughout World War II. With a great cast, beautiful direction and surreal sets and lighting that give the impression of actual flight, “Fly” rises above the standard dramatic fare offered this season. Of special note is Omar Edwards, who plays Tap Griot, a character who acts as almost as a Greek chorus commenting on the plot of the story through exacting tap dancing choreography.
