Deux Requiems: ‘The Sleeping Children’
The Musica Sacra Cantorum, Sarasota’s premier sacred music choir, the Canterbury Girls Choir and First Brass of Sarasota will join their voices for the U.S. premiere of composer Chris Williams’ “Tsunami Requiem,” as part of Deux Requiems: “The Sleeping Children.” The piece is based on the real-life tragedy of the Boxing Day tsunami of 2004 that devastated southern India and killed more than 230,000 people. Williams’ emotional piece calls for an adult, children and brass choirs.
Following this contemporary requiem will be Gabriel Fauré’s “Requiem in D minor, Op. 48.” Musica Sacra Cantorum will present Fauré’s 1887 vocal gem in its original, smaller orchestration. This is the last concert in the relatively young choir’s current season, and it’ll close with relish and plenty of passion.
