Smithers resigns as Cougars coach

Cardinal Mooney football coach Josh Smithers stepped down from his position March 31 after having spent the past 15 years on the Cougars’ coaching staff.

A former three-sport athlete at Cardinal Mooney, Smithers informed Athletic Director Bill Donivan of his resignation, citing personal reasons, and then met with his players the following day. Smithers coached Cardinal Mooney to back-to-back district championships in 2013 and 2014.

Former Southeast head coach Paul Maechtle, who served as Smithers’ wide receivers coach last season, was named the Cougars’ interim coach for the spring season.

Cardinal Mooney, which is on spring break until April 12, will begin looking for a new coach. Interested candidates should send a résumé to Principal Steve Christie at [email protected]
