Nick’s Pick

‘American Pie’

The cast and crew of Florida Studio Theatre’s original cabaret production, “American Pie,” convened in December to begin rehearsals. The show is a slice of the American folk, rock and singer-songwriters who responded to and were influenced by the musical explosion of the British Invasion (The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who and The Kinks) in the mid-1960s. Now icons of the contemporary American songbook, then unknown musicians such as Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, Carole King, Neil Diamond, Billy Joel and Bob Dylan made their own history in response to the musical explosion from across the pond.

In capturing the music and feeling of this era, FST Artistic Director Richard Hopkins and Managing Director Rebecca Hopkins made FST history in the process. “American Pie,” which opened in the Goldstein Cabaret on New Year’s Eve, has been extended for a second time through May 10. By the time the lights dim for their final performance, the five-person cast of actors, performers and musicians will have performed “American Pie” a total of 158 times over a span of 19 weeks. Cast members Joey Barreiro, Tony Bruno, Joe Casey, Sarah Hund and Ben Mackel have set the record for longest-running cabaret production in the theater’s 40-plus year history.

With performances selling out every week of the show’s multimonth run, this last push into the close of the art season will surely sell fast.
