The Ballets Russes: A Tribute to Nijinsky

After a season filled with a premiere by Will Tuckett and performances of great pieces by George Balanchine, Christopher Bruce, Sir Frederick Ashton, Rudolf Nureyev, Paul Taylor and resident choreographer Ricardo Graziano, the Sarasota Ballet will close its season with a tribute to perhaps the most influential ballet company of the 20th century: the Ballet Russes. Organized by producer and impresario Sergei Diaghilev in 1909, the company premiered in Paris and toured throughout Europe and North and South America until 1929. The company served as a canvas for some of the most iconic choreographers, dancers, composers and designers of a generation. These included Anna Pavlova, Tamara Karsavina, Mikhail Fokine, Léonide Massine, Vaslav Nijinsky, George Balanchine, Alexandre Benois, Léon Bakst, Coco Chanel, Pablo Picasso, Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, Erik Satie, Igor Stravinsky and Richard Strauss. The Sarasota Ballet pays tribute to these artistic pioneers and innovators with a program that includes Fokine’s “Les Sylphides” and “Petrushka” and Nijinsky’s “Afternoon of a Faun” with music provided by the Sarasota Orchestra. “Les Sylphides” is a narrative-less reverie with white sylphs dancing and playing in the crystal moonlight with a young man just described as The Poet. “Petruska” is a Russian fable depicting the story of a straw puppet coming to life. And closing the season is “Afternoon of a Faun,” considered to be one of the first modern ballets.
