Lady Mustangs win regional crown
The Lakewood Ranch High girls track team scored 85.5 points to win the Class 3A-Region 3 meet April 23, at Charlotte High.
The Lady Mustangs used their depth in all facets of the competition to breeze past regional runner-up Naples (59 points).
Talia Falco cleared 5 feet, 6 inches to win the high jump and advance to next weekend’s Class 3A state meet. She also finished second in the triple jump (39-06).
The top four finishers in each event earned a berth in the state meet, which will be held May 2, in Jacksonville.

Thunder dominates Cougars in title rout
The Out-of-Door Academy baseball team cruised to an 11-1 victory versus Cardinal Mooney in the Class 3A-District 10 championship April 24 in a game that was shortened to five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Owen Ragsdale earned the win on the mound for the Thunder, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out four.
Jake Romine went 4-for-4 with a home run to lead off the game and four RBIs. Carson Jungers went 3-for-3 with an RBI. Jimmy Kuebler went 3-for-4 with a triple.
With the win, ODA will play host to Calvary Christian in the Class 3A-Region 3 quarterfinals April 30.
Palm-Aire member wins Florida Senior Amateur
Palm-Aire resident Gordon Marshall shot a combined 209 to win the 54th Senior Amateur Championship April 14 through April 16, at The Country Club of Naples.
Marshall beat 144 of the top senior amateur golfers in the state to capture his first Senior Amateur Championship. Participants must be 55 or older to compete in the championship.
Marshall opened with a 2-under-par 70 and sat tied for second place. On day two, Marshall shot an even par 72, which was good enough to push him into first place by one stroke. Marshall birdied holes 13, 15, 16 and 18 on the final day of competition to finish with a 5-under-par 67 and finish six strokes ahead of first-round leader Buddy Alexander.
