AUG. 16

SLURRING SAILOR
4:08 p.m. — Off the Key
Assist Other Agency:  A U.S. Coast Guard patrol boat requested Longboat Key marine patrol assistance in stopping a sailboat southwest of Jewfish Key because officers believed its captain was “very intoxicated.” The boat was escorted to the Linley Street boat ramp, and its owner had slurred speech and acted confused. The boat owner said he was taking several medications that affect his balance. He was charged with boating under the influence and refusing to submit to a Breathalyzer test. 

AUG. 20

WILD RIDE
11:51 a.m. — Intersection of GMD and Longboat Club Road
Reckless Driving: Police witnessed the operator of a blue BMW driving southbound recklessly, weaving in and out of lanes. The car then drove head on toward a truck, causing the truck’s driver to drive onto the sidewalk to avoid a collision. The BMW driver told police he didn’t feel well after a dentist visit after police pulled him over. He was checked out by firefighter/paramedics and given a ride home.

AUG. 21

POWER PLAY
5:55 p.m. — 6800 block of GMD
Fraud: A restaurant owner told police a man identifying himself as a power company representative informed him over the phone he was past due on an $875 power bill, and his power would be turned off if he didn’t pay it immediately. The caller told him to go to the nearest Winn-Dixie and retrieve a reloadable debit card to pay the bill. Police told him it was a common scam.

AUG. 22

COSTLY COLLISION
11:18 a.m. — 6800 block of GMD
Rescue: A woman pulled onto the Gulf of Mexico Drive sidewalk heading southbound when a bicyclist heading northbound crashed into her. The driver broke her ankle in the collision.
