Devin McDermott, a 2012 graduate of Lakewood Ranch High, runs cross-country and track for the University of Florida.
McDermott competed in four cross-country races for the Gators as a redshirt sophomore in 2014, setting a new personal best of 17:55.55 in the 5K at the Mountain Dew Invitational and helping lead the Gators to a first-place finish. She also set a new 6K PR (20:44.60) at the NCAA South Region Championships.
On the track, McDermott competed in three indoor meets and three outdoor meets earlier this year. She set a new PR in the preliminaries of the 1,500-meter run (4:38.91) at the SEC Outdoor Championships and qualified for the finals in the 5,000. McDermott also was named to the 2015 SEC Academic Honor Roll.

Lakewood swings past Venice
The Lakewood Ranch High girls golf team shot a combined 173 to beat Venice (175) Aug. 25, at the River Club.
Katie Kroos-Roberts and Theresa Morrissey each shot 38 to tie for medalist honors. Sophia Warren shot 42 followed by Darby Laurvick (45), Maya Isom (46) and Morgan Mulholland (51).
TOPSoccer registration upcoming
Braden River Soccer Club will hold registration for its fall TOPSoccer season from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Sept. 12, at the clubhouse by the soccer fields.
TOPSoccer is a free program designed to allow special needs children, ages 4 and up, the opportunity to learn and play soccer. Each player will be paired up with a volunteer buddy, who will assist him or her on the field.
The fall season will run Sept. 20 through Nov. 15 with sessions from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., Sundays. There will be no session Oct. 11.
All participants will receive a uniform, soccer ball and water bottle. Soccer cleats are not required, but shin guards are recommended.
