Friday, Dec. 18
Monthly Contra Dances
Start at 7:30 p.m. at Fogartyville Community Media and Arts Center, 525 Kumquat Court. The second season of monthly community contra dance kicks off and is open to all dancers. There will be instructional walkthroughs starting at 7:30 p.m. with regular dancing at 8 p.m. Tickets are $8 in advance; $10 at the door. Visit wslr.org.

 

Friday, Dec. 18 to Sunday, Dec. 20, 23 and 24
Live Nativity Scene
Runs from noon to 4 p.m. Dec. 18, Dec. 20, Dec. 23 and Dec. 24, at Big Cat Habitat and Gulf Coast Sanctuary, 7101 Palmer Blvd. This animal exhibit will bring the nativity scene to life. Admission is $15 for adults; $7 for children. Visit bigcathabitat.org. 


Saturday, Dec. 19 
Holiday Try-it Workshop
Runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Suncoast Science Center, 4452 Beneva Road. Projects include laser-cut holiday ornaments. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Cost is $15. Project fee includes wood for five ornaments, paint and your choice of ribbon or a decorative metal ornament hanger. Visit suncoastscience.org.

Lights in Bloom
Runs from 6 to 9 p.m. at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, 811 Palm Ave. Explore and view life-size garden-themed holiday lights that transform the gardens into a tropical wonderland. Admission is $25 for adults, $20 for members; $7.50 for children. For a schedule, visit Selby.org.  


Monday, Dec. 21
Ringling By the Bay
Starts at 5 p.m. at Ringling Museum grounds, 5401 Bay Shore Road. Kettle of Fish will perform. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. Admission is $10; free for members. Call 358-3180

Sunday, Dec. 20 
Messiah Sing-Along
Starts at 7:30 p.m. at Church of the Redeemer, 222 S. Palm Ave. This yearly event is a tribute to Daniel Moe that features Christmas selections from Handel’s Messiah, with solos and the chamber orchestra. Tickets are $10. Visit redeemersarasota.org.

Monday, Dec.  21
Silent Light
Starts at 5:30 p.m. at St. Boniface Episcopal Church. A Service of Healing on the Longest Night of the year, for those who are hurting and grieving.  It will be a service of quiet reflection, lighting candles for loved ones missed or in diminished health, anointing with holy oil, and the healing power of the Holy Eucharist.  All are welcome to this special service on Monday, December 21, at 5:30 p.m.

Monday, Dec. 21
Winter Solstice Labyrinth Walk
Starts at 7 p.m. at St. Boniface Episcopal Church.  A time for rekindling, for rebirthing, for forgiveness, for appreciating those around us. Everyone is welcome. Finger labyrinths are available for those unable to walk the labyrinth, and there will be helpers for those new to walking a labyrinth in the St. Boniface courtyard. Visit bonifacechurch.org.

Tuesday, Dec. 22
Siesta Key Chapel’s Jazz Vespers
Starts at 7 p.m. at Siesta Key Chapel, 4615 Gleason Ave. The service is a collaboration between musicians George DeJong and Susie Wills. Admission is free. Call 349-1166.

Thursday, Dec. 24 
Christmas at Selby Five Points Park
Starts at 6:30 p.m. at Selby Five Points Park. The Shore Church invites the community to a Christmas Eve service. There will be music, lights and the telling of the Christmas story. Admission is free. Visit theshorechurch.com.
