False alarm
9:58 a.m. — 3500 block of Fair Oaks Lane.
Burglar Alarm: A man who was hired to paint a home’s garage opened a window and accidentally activated the burglar alarm. Police contacted the homeowner, who confirmed that he was allowed to be on the property.

Washed up
2:11 p.m. — 500 block of Harbor Point Road.
Boat: A reported navigational hazard turned out to be an outdoor umbrella from a Siesta Key restaurant. Public Works disposed of it due to its condition.

9:54 a.m. — 100 block
of Longboat Club Road.
Civil Disturbance: A resort safety manager received threatening phone calls from a former employee. Police warned the former staffer not to set foot on the resort’s property.

Sticky fingers
2:41 p.m. — 500 block
of Ranger Lane.
Larceny: A woman said her friend was helping her clean out her garage and believes he stole her other friend’s laptop when he left. The man denied taking it, but his wife returned it to the owner the next day.

Missing from the report
1:16 p.m. — 400 block of GMD.
Civil Disturbance: A woman said that a man accused him of taking his wallet and watch while she was removing her trunk from his apartment and told her he planned to file a police report. The man had gone to the police station earlier in the day. He reported that the woman had been in his unit earlier that day but did not mention the missing items.

11:37 p.m. — 5300 block of GMD.
Security Check: Dispatch called the keyholder of a drycleaning business after police found that a cash drawer was pulled out and a door was unlocked. The woman declined to come to the scene, saying she would be there in the morning.

Jan. 25
Toilet toss

3:27 a.m. — 2000 block of GMD.
Domestic Disturbance: A man threw his soon-to-be ex-wife’s cellphone in the toilet and urinated on it during an argument. The couple had argued after the man told the woman he had filed for divorce. The woman purchased two plane tickets to fly out-of-state with their 18-month child to stay with her family, but the man did not want her leaving the state with their child. The man agreed to leave their residence for the night. Police told the woman to notify her husband if she plans to leave the home with their child.

Code Enforcement: Police warned a man that town ordinance prohibits construction during certain hours.

8:32 p.m. — 600 block of Norton Street
Abandoned 911 Call: A man called 911 after a woman asked him and his wife to check on her parents, who are his neighbors, because he was not comfortable going to the residence by himself; he hung up after he checked on the neighbors and saw they were OK. The man is a keyholder for the couple and said he would tell the woman that her parents are fine.

1:15 a.m. — 2200 block of GMD.
Suspicious Circumstance: A resident gave $20 to a homeless man whom he has helped on several occasions, then dropped him off in Sarasota. The homeless man said he wanted to be transported to the resident’s address after Sarasota police picked him up. The resident called police after the Sarasota officer knocked on his door. The Sarasota officer transported the man to a local shelter after the resident said he did not want the man to return.

of Bay Isles Parkway.
Trespassing: Police helped a manager trespass a man from the grocery store. The man tried to steal a rotisserie chicken and coleslaw container by placing them in his backpack.

4:45 p.m. — 5200 block of GMD.
Welfare Check: A man received no answer after trying to call his wife all day and asked police to call her to make sure she was OK. The woman pulled her vehicle into the condo’s parking lot while police were investigating.

Back-up call
5:55 p.m. — 700 block of Tarawitt Drive.
Property Damage: A man exchanged words with a driver after he accidentally backed into his neighbor’s backflow prevention device, causing a leak. The driver said he was sorry for the damage.
The owner of his company said he would arrange to repair the damage.

Jan. 27
Lock it up
1:16 a.m. — 6800 block of GMD.
Suspicious Circumstance:

A Realtor noticed a storage room door was open at a house she was checking on for the out-of-town owners. Police determined there was no forced entry, and the Realtor locked the storage room.

Taking credit
2:30 p.m. — 600 block of El Centro.
Fraud/Identity Theft:

A bank representative notified a woman that someone was trying to open a credit card in her name. Police gave her an identity theft victims’ rights brochure.
