Body recovered after Ringling Bridge jump

The Sarasota Police Department has recovered the body of an unidentified individual who jumped from the Ringling Bridge before 9:15 a.m. this morning.

The "suicidal subject" was allegedly involved with a hit-and-run accident near the intersection of North Tamiami Trail and University Parkway, after which they fled to the John Ringling Causeway, according to SPD spokeswoman Genevieve Judge.

After parking, the individual jumped from the north side of the bridge.

Traffic is beginning to back up on the westbound lanes of the bridge, and officers have advised drivers to avoid the area.
