Nick’s Picks

‘The Golden Cockerel’
Sarasota has six chances to catch the rare Russian operatic import of “The Golden Cockerel.” Written by composer Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov, the three-act opera is based on Russia’s modern poet laureate Alexander Pushkin’s poem “The Tale of the Golden Cockerel.” The opera has been rarely performed in the United States after World War II, but it is a morality tale on the ills of political and personal paranoia when a king fears being attacked by a neighboring state and seeks the advice of a supernatural rooster: the titular golden cockerel. The opera will give audiences a taste of the colorful and exotic world of Rimksy-Korsakov’s vision, the romantic composer’s last opera.

Where: Sarasota Opera
When: 7:30 p.m. Feb. 21 and 24; Runs through March 19.
Tickets: $19 to $125
Info: Call 366-8450.

Re:Purposed
William Shakespeare wrote in “The Tempest,” “We are such stuff as dreams are made on,” and the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art’s newest exhibition Re:Purposed is made on the millions of objects that get cast off every year. Composed of 10 American and international artists, the works are constructed entirely out of repurposed detritus and garbage. These orphans of the material world are given new lives by artists such as Nick Cave, who creates colorful and vibrant suits, and Jill Sigman, who creates an ongoing hut series made out of trash and objects found in Sarasota.

Where: The Ringling
When: Runs through May 17.
Tickets: $25 for adults; $23 for 65 plus; and $5 for children 6 to 17 and college students with ID
Info: Call 359-5700.
