Cardinal visits St. Martha
Vatican Cardinal Zenon Grocholewski visited the St. Martha Catholic School and Dreams Are Free Catholic School Feb. 9. Students greeted Grocholewski before he was given a tour of the school and facilities. Grocholewski serves as the prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education. The cardinal leads education efforts for the Catholic church and reports directly to Pope Francis on educational matters.
During his visit he toured three schools of the Catholic Diocese of Venice at the invitation of the Most Rev. Frank J. Dewane, bishop of the Diocese of Venice.

Garden Club offers scholarships
The Sarasota Garden Club is offering two scholarships for local high school and college students. Sarasota high school seniors who will be college bound are eligible to apply for a $2,000 scholarship. This is double the value of last year’s scholarship. The student must have a 3.0 grade point average and is planning to enter an accredited college or university next fall. The student must be a citizen of the United States and a resident of Sarasota. The applicant should be interested in the field of natural science.

An award for the amount of $4,000 is available for a current college student who is a citizen of the United States, a two-year resident of Sarasota County and has completed at least two years of study. Other qualifications include a GPA of 3.0 or above and an interest in a degree in natural science or related fields. The applicant must be finishing his or her sophomore year, or above, at an accredited college or university in the United States.
