Marina owner asks for crosswalk at Blackburn Point

Sarasota County commissioners received an email today from Dave Babel, owner of Osprey Harbor Club Marina, but Babel said this wasn’t his first attempt to request a crosswalk for Blackburn Point Road.

Babel’s marina also has a bait shop, and it’s located across the road from Blackburn Point Park and the new additions. With the new amenities opening up—such as the boat launch and fishing pier—Babel wants a cross walk put in between his business and the park. His business will be getting more traffic, and he’s concerned for safety.

“We have some gorgeous docks being built… the fishing pier is right across from me,” he said.

The park is already a popular fishing location, he said, and more people will be crossing the street when the park is finished. Some people drive fast down the narrow road, Babel said.

He’s talked to county staff about the issue about a year ago, and spoke with both the county project manager and the construction contractors, in addition to this most recent email. So far, though, he hasn’t heard back about any plans to get a cross walk.

“Your aggressive attention to this matter is greatly appreciated,” he said in the email.

Although Babel wants the need for a crosswalk in the park to be addressed, he said he’s looking forward to the park opening up, and not just for the added business. He’s watched the park develop from across the street.

“It’s come a long way,” he said. “I’m excited.”

Also, Babel said that he, some of his frequent boaters and nearby residents planned to participate in the county’s “Adopt a Park” program, and adopt Blackburn Point Park. They would help the county to keep the park clean and presentable.

“That’s right up the alley of my folks here,” he said.
